What I'm Up To...

Sunday, March 9, 2008

I think I want to start collecting/buying/listening to vinyl records; not instead of CDs, but in addition to. Does anyone know much about it? It was obviously before my time, but from what I've heard, the music quality is great, and since I'll most likely be in New York after I graduate, I figure there's no better place to get a collection started. If anyone knows anything about this topic, hit me up and give me some tips. I know jack about this stuff. Thanks.

  2. Vinyl records can sound better because they rely on analog transmission of data which is basically a thumbprint of what the sound actually sounds like. CDs use a very, very detailed digital approximation of what the sound sounds like using 1's and 0's (hence digital, this is the base language of computers).

CDs are a very good estimation of how an analog (vinyl) track would sound. When you see that your MP3 (also digital) has a quality of 128 or 160 kbps that means that for every second of sound on an iPod track, you would have 128,000 or 160,000 digital bytes of sound. A byte is a set of 8 1's or 0's (ex: 1010 0111) And each byte is computer code for a certain sound. Add up a bunch of these sounds and you can replicate a vinyl record almost flawlessly.

Now, the downside of vinyl is that you have a needle rubbing against a plastic record. So, overtime, a vinyl record has to lose it's quality because the needle will break off chunks of the plastic on the microscopic level. CD players only shoot a beam of light at a CD, so if you treat CDs with care, they keep the same quality forever.
